Camping Stoves that don’t cost the earth

A recent survey of more than 3,000 people across eight countries has found that in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, people are more concerned about addressing environmental challenges and are more committed to changing their own behaviour to advance sustainability*. As a brand that has been helping people explore the outdoors since 1892, including pioneering adventurers such as Roald Amundsen, Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary, Primus understands the importance of protecting the natural environment for generations to come. Real change only happens through action, which is why the Swedish brand focuses on sustainability throughout its manufacturing, from its stoves and gas to the packaging it uses.

Manufacturing Durability

Primus stoves are put through rigorous testing at the brand’s R&D and test facility in Stockholm, including a cold room where stoves are tested down to around -20°C. Passionate about solid craftsmanship and small-scale production, they are also then individually test fired before leaving Primus’ manufacturing factory in Estonia. They are also made using carefully selected materials which have a long lifespan, ensuring they will last through extreme conditions and frequent use. By prioritising quality, Primus makes it possible for outdoor enthusiasts to buy once and buy well, reducing waste and their stove’s environmental impact. In time, a well-maintained Primus stove will develop its own patina, marking the adventures it has accompanied you on and making it unique to you.

Replaceable and Recyclable Parts

Life in the outdoors can put a lot of stress on your kit, so the Swedish stove expert designs stoves and products that can be easily repaired. From its award winning and highly technical Omnifuel multifuel stove to its unique and retro Onja double burner LPgas stove, Primus provides replaceable parts and continues to stock spare parts for old products which are no longer in the range. This is so that you can replace worn parts as easily as possible to further extend the life of your Primus stove. If, against all odds, your stove is damaged beyond repair, its component parts can be used to produce new products as they are made from pure materials which can be disassembled and recycled.

Carbon Dioxide Neutral Fuel

For seven years, all Primus gas, from its versatile Power Gas to its Winter Gas which works down to -22°C, has been CO2 neutral. In 1978, Primus began its environmental work developing gas burners for African countries to reduce the amount of wood used cooking. Since then, Primus has continued to offset the CO2 emissions produced by its gas cartridges by supporting various projects around the world. These include projects that help households in Uganda and Ghana become greener by offering subsidies to make fuel-efficient stoves more accessible for everyone, investing in reforestation in Canada and a permanent forest carbon sink in New Zealand, and, most recently, supporting the India Organic Waste Biogas project.

The latter distributes biogas units to those living in poverty across India, reducing or replacing the need for firewood, electricity and fossil fuels. These units use organic food waste instead of cow manure to produce biogas which can be used for cooking, heating and to generate electricity in places the grid does not reach. This makes them self-sufficient and suitable for both rural and urban areas, meaning more people can access affordable, clean energy and improve their quality of life.

Fuel Efficiency

Standard stoves have an efficiency rate of 40%, meaning that more than half of the energy used to power them is wasted. Primus recognised the need for more fuel efficient stoves, reviewing every aspect of their stoves to produce its PrimeTech Stove Set which offers an efficiency rate that’s nearly double that of a conventional stove. This is achieved by improvements to the windshield and equipping the pot with a built-in heat exchanger to improve the absorption of heat from the burner, which has in turn been optimised to work with the fuel-efficient pot.

Low Impact Packaging

Around half of Primus’ packaging is FSC certified, meaning that the materials used and the whole manufacturing process is fully traceable and done according to strict standards. The remaining half of the packaging is made from recycled paper, helping to minimise its environmental impact.
